Arrest Just Made in Disappearance of 5-Year-Old Boy

A man has been arrested and charged with the kidnapping and murder of 5-year-old Michael Vaughn, who disappeared from his home in Fruitland, Idaho, on July 27, 2021. The case has haunted the local community and has drawn national attention as authorities worked tirelessly for over two years to uncover the truth behind the child’s disappearance.

Michael, affectionately known as “Monkey” by his family, was last seen at his home with his parents and younger sibling when he vanished without a trace. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance raised immediate suspicion of foul play, prompting an intensive search effort led by local law enforcement alongside community volunteers.

In a press conference held shortly after Michael’s disappearance, Fruitland Police Chief J.D. Huff emphasized the department’s commitment to finding the child, stating, “The search for Michael will not stop until he’s found.” Despite these assurances, the investigation yielded few leads for several months. Michael’s parents, Brandy and Tyler Vaughn, publicly pleaded for help, urging anyone with information to come forward.

Nearly a year passed without significant progress in the case until authorities received critical information from a resident living near the Vaughn family. This led to the excavation of a yard belonging to Sarah Wandra, who had lived in close proximity to the Vaughns. During the search, human remains detection dogs alerted to several areas of the yard, though Michael’s remains were not recovered.

The investigation took a pivotal turn when body camera footage of Stacy Wandra, Sarah’s husband, was inadvertently released. In the footage, Stacy provided details about Michael’s burial, suggesting he had been wrapped in a trash bag and buried in the Wandra’s backyard. This information led authorities to believe that Michael had been abducted and subsequently murdered.

Following a thorough investigation, Payette County Prosecutor Mike Duke announced in October 2023 that charges were being filed against Stacy Wandra for murder, kidnapping, and destruction of evidence. The prosecutor acknowledged the challenges faced due to the inability to recover Michael’s remains, stating that the pursuit of justice would continue regardless of whether the child’s body was found.

Stacy Wandra recently appeared in an Arizona court for a hearing regarding his extradition to Idaho. He waived his right to contest the extradition and is expected to face charges in Idaho. Meanwhile, Sarah Wandra, who was already incarcerated on unrelated charges, had initially been suspected of withholding information about Michael’s death; however, those charges were later dropped.

The case has left a profound impact on the Vaughn family, with Brandy Vaughn expressing her anguish over the loss of her son in a heartfelt video. She has remained steadfast in her public appeals for justice, urging those involved to come forward and assist in bringing closure to her family.

As the investigation continues, authorities are actively seeking two additional individuals, Adrien Lucien and Brandon Sherliff, who are believed to have knowledge of the events surrounding Michael’s abduction. The Fruitland Police Department remains committed to uncovering the truth and hopes that the recent developments will lead to more information regarding the case.

This tragic case underscores the importance of community support in missing child investigations and the relentless pursuit of justice for victims and their families. The Vaughn family, along with law enforcement, continues to hold hope for resolution and accountability in the heart-wrenching disappearance of Michael Vaughn.
